Unsure about what your young child really grasps about their adoption story?
Wondering where to begin in helping them assemble more of the pieces?
Learn an approach that uses their creativity and playfulness to build a story that makes sense to them!
Instead of the awkwardness of a conversation that might be over their head, share details of the adventure that made you a family in pictures you create together.
Drawing Together
Brings your family’s stories to life
This two-part live, interactive workshop teaches you a format to:
Do something fun & creative as a family
Touch on adoption & make it an easier topic in the future
Learn about how they think about it
Help your child feel confident telling their story
The more a child can share of their own story, in their own way, the more confident they feel about adoption.
Building that story alongside you builds trust and connection.
Session 1 will guide you through:
A format for drawing family stories together for fun and connection
How to capture the stories that have meaning to your children
Then, before Session 2, you'll draw at home when it suits your schedule
Session 2 provides the opportunity to:
Share your experience and hear from other parents
Consider what your drawing tells you about how your child sees their adoption story and what made you a family
Think about how stories your family shares shape identity, security, and an understanding of adoption
Dr. Kris Freeark will be leading both sessions of the workshop. She will share stories of experiences adoptive families have had with this activity. She brings insights as an adoptive mother, family therapist, child psychologist, and adoption researcher.
